How to choose your first Bansuri

How to Choose Your First Bansuri: The Ultimate Guide

Welcome to the world of flutes! At Radhe Flutes, we believe that everyone deserves to experience the joy of creating music. Whether you are inspired by Krishna, a Bollywood song, or simply the meditative sound of the wind, choosing your first instrument is a special moment.

Choosing your first instrument to learn is the most important among all the steps and choosing a Flute Instrument is most difficult among all due to the available of many different options.

However, seeing so many sizes and materials can be confusing. Don't worry—we have simplified everything for you. Follow these steps to find your perfect match.

Step 1: Right-Handed vs. Left-Handed

This is the most common confusion. Your flute orientation is not necessarily the same as your writing hand. It depends on how you naturally hold a stick or rod.

Perform this simple test: Pick up a stick (or a rolled-up newspaper) and bring it to your lips as if playing a flute.

  • Right-Handed Flute: If your Left Hand instinctively goes to the top holes (near your face) and the flute extends to your Right side.

    • Note: This is the most common style.

  • Left-Handed Flute: If your Right Hand instinctively goes to the top holes and the flute extends to your Left side.

Radhe Tip: Don't force a grip. Choose the one that feels natural to your shoulders and arms.

Step 2: Choosing the Right Material

Unlike traditional markets that only offer Bamboo, at Radhe Flutes we offer innovation.

1. PVC Fiber / Carbon Fiber (Highly Recommended for Beginners)

If you are just starting, this is your best friend.

  • Durability: These flutes are virtually indestructible. They won't crack in winter or air-conditioning.

  • Maintenance: They are washable! You don't need to oil them.

  • Tuning: The tuning remains consistent regardless of the weather.

2. Bamboo

The traditional choice.

  • Tone: Offers that distinct, organic, earthy timbre.

  • Care: Requires maintenance (oiling) and protection from temperature changes to prevent cracking.

3. Acrylic

For those who want style and substance.

  • Aesthetics: These look like glass/crystal—absolutely stunning on stage.

  • Sound: They offer a solid, dense sound profile similar to professional materials.

Step 3: Selecting the Scale (The Size of the Flute)

The "Scale" determines the length of the flute and the deepness of the sound. Size matters because your fingers need to be able to cover the holes comfortably.

The Gold Standard: C Natural Middle(19 inches)

If you are confused, buy the C Natural Middle. It is the undisputed King of beginner flutes.

  • Why?

    • Perfect Size: It is neither too long (easy finger stretch) nor too small (easy to blow).

    • Song Library: Most Bollywood and Pop songs are composed in C, meaning you can play along easily.

    • Learning Resources: 90% of tutorial videos online are taught using a C Natural flute.

The Classical Choice: C Sharp (C#) Medium

  • This is slightly smaller than the C Natural. It is the standard scale used in Indian Classical music accompaniments.

For Intermediate Players: G Base (25 inches)

  • The G Base is famous for that deep, rich, meditative sound that vibrates in your chest.

  • Warning: It is long. The finger holes are far apart. If you are a beginner with average-sized hands, this might be difficult to hold. Master the C Natural first!

For Advanced Players: E Base (30 inches)

  • A massive flute with a profound, bass sound. This requires excellent breath control and very flexible fingers (often using the "piper's grip"). Recommended for professionals or advanced hobbyists.

Step 4: A Note for Kids (Under 7-8 Years)

Side-blown bansuris require a specific "embouchure" (blowing technique) that can be frustrating for small children to learn immediately.

For kids, we recommend our Straight Flutes (Fipple Flutes).

  • How it works: You blow directly into the mouthpiece (like a whistle or recorder).

  • Benefit: It produces sound immediately, keeping the child motivated and interested in music!

Step 5: Make it Yours (Color & Style)

A flute is an extension of your personality. At Radhe Flutes, we don't just give you a bare instrument; we style it.

  • Threading: We offer 11 different thread color combinations. Whether you want a fiery Red, a spiritual Saffron, or a cool Blue, pick the color that inspires you to practice.

  • Protection: Every Radhe Flute comes with a matching Velvet Cover. We have 11 velvet cover combinations to match your thread choice, keeping your instrument safe and looking premium.
